Description

Abstract

W próbkach z części N wyrobiska występuje ponadto cementacja kalcytem i hematytem.

This dissertation describes petrographic characteristics of the Lower Carboniferous bentonite from Czatkowice Mine near Krzeszowice. Tests were performed based on macroscopic observations, using optical microscopy and X-ray powder diffractions of field samples taken from two opposite parts of quarry. The analysis indicated that the most widespread clay mineral, in discussed bentonite, is mixed-layer illite-smectite, formed by transformation of volcanic glass, then by illitization process. Other components are quartz, alkali feldspars (sanidine) and trace amount of mica, which are primary igneous minerals (pyroclastic grains). Size of those components not exceed 0,3 mm. Moreover, in samples from the north part of quarry appears the influence of calcite and hematite cementation. The samples also contain a small amount of organic compounds. Due to the presence of mixed-layer illite-smectite mineral, bentonite can be classified as K-bentonite.
