European integration from the perspective of Eastern European semi-peripheries of the European Union. Case study on Poland
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Żuk, Piotr
The article presents various opinions and assessments of Polish society regarding membership in the European Union and its consequences. 2014 marks 10 years since countries from Central-Eastern Europe became a part of the European Union. It is a good opportunity for an afterthought on the role and place of the post-communist countries in today’s world order. The author of the article suggests that perspectives of post-colonial theories or the system-world dependence theory can be a useful tool to help understand the state of affairs in the region. It is also indicated by the research studies which demonstrate that the respondents notice a gap between Poland and the standards of Western European countries in all aspects of their lives. It does not only refer to the social sphere, but also to assess the institutional order or civic self-awareness. In spite of difficulties and crises in such countries as Greece or Portugal within the European Union, Polish society – as shown by the results of the author’s research studies – perceives further European integration to be a solution to its own problems.
Wizerunek wroga w kulturze politycznej
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Buchner, Wojciech
The article is an attempt to explain the phenomenon of hostility in the political culture since at least the early modern era. The author argues that the image of the enemy in western political culture is being dehumanized because of his axiological depreciation. This phenomenon is analysed by using the method of the history of ideas, resorting to examples of the Reformation, religious wars and the French Revolution. Formerly these events brought about the escalation of hostilities in the public life, and today they create the veiled ideological standards of tolerance, human rights and false humanitarianism.
Behawioralizm w amerykańskiej politologii. Epitafium dla częściowo udanego protestu
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Porębski, Leszek
A few decades have passed since the behavioral revolution in American political science occurred. The paper presents main factors leading to the domination of behavioralism in political studies in the USA, in the 50. and 60. of the XX$^{th}$ century. They were of both intellectual and institutional nature. Disappointment with research results achieved within the institutional paradigm as well as the growing popularity of neopositivism should be mentioned among the former. Generous financial support of research dedicated to human behavior seems to be crucial in the institutional context. Basic assumptions of behavioral political science are discussed in depth in the text. They are: rigorous methodology, the emphasis on the theory construction and the exclusion of values from the research process. The successive part of the text presents the dynamics of the behavioralism evolution and major planes of its critique. The most important of the latter include: the problem of engagement of political science in resolution of political and social problems as well as methods appropriate to political inquiry. In fact they are the same problems which are debated in political science since its emergence. Thus, behavioralism while gaining remarkable significance, has not resolved the basic problems of the scholarly identity of political science.
The genealogy of pedagogy as a scientific discourse in light of »Discipline and Punish« – towards a paradox of pedagogical philosophy
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Rybińska, Krystyna Maria
The aim of this article is to outline the philosophical genealogy of pedagogical discourse based on Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish (1977). The undertaken line of inquiry posits this reflection in light of the presupposed question about the core of pedagogical discourse since although in the course of the continuous academic debate stemming from Foucault’s writings many insightful works have emerged with regard to the critical analysis of the educational system and the inner logic underlying the functioning mode of the schools, and although the critical approach appears to be fundamental in the contemporary humanities, the very discourse seems to face an inter-conceptual resistance, which results in the fact that »with some hesitations and some dissent, contemporary critical traditions continue a nineteenth-century view of social redemption through schooling« (Popkiewitz and Brennan 1998). In the article I put forward the possibility that the seemingly unresolvable theoretical resistance residing in the very essence of pedagogy as a scientific discourse, once reexamined in fact veils an inverted conception of pedagogical philosophy as the core of Foucault’s stance.
Otwarty charakter encyklopedii. Wikipedia jako źródło informacji w cyfrowym świecie
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2016) Kopeć, Katarzyna Dorota
The paper’s aim is to explore the evolving nature of an encyclopaedia in the era of participatory culture. First, the article claims that there is no sense to pigeonhole Wikipedia as an encyclopaedia. To explain this statement, Wikipedia’s functional features against traditional knowledge compendia like an encyclopaedia are analysed. Second, it refers to empirical research outcomes on the Wikipedia’s reliability. Finally, the article closes with thoughts on a virtual encyclopaedia that is an interesting case of a network organisation in the era of participatory culture. It also points out research directions important to understand this phenomenon from the humanistic perspective.
