Od tolerancji nowoczesnej do ponowoczesnej. Dynamika i uwarunkowania postaw wobec imigrantów i mniejszości narodowych wśród mieszkańców województwa lubuskiego w latach 2005-2014
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Zielińska, Maria; Szaban, Dorota
The article is part of a social debate on Poles’ tolerance towards different cultures, races, and religions, which has a special meaning in the context of the potential possibilities of the settlement in Poland of refugees from African and Middle east countries, people from different cultural circles (mostly Muslims). The article presents data from three editions of the lubuskie Social Survey (2005, 2009 and 2014). The analysis carried out in 2005 showed that residents of the lubuskie voivodship are characterized by a relatively high level of tolerance (compared to other Polish regions) towards immigrants, foreigners and ethnic minorities. The article presents changes in the perspective of 2005–2015, when many events took place in europe and worldwide which could significantly change attitudes towards the indicated category. A further objective of this article is to answer the question whether and to what extent the sense of Polish identity with europe and public confidence determine opinions about immigrants in Poland.

Transnarodowość w przestrzeni domowej polskich rodzin migracyjnych w Norwegii
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Ślusarczyk, Magdalena; Pustułka, Paula
An already complex notion of home requires inclusion of a wide array of factors that determine what home is and is not. Understanding home necessitates crossing multiple nation-state borders and cultural boundaries, while also featuring negotiations within family traditions. In the article, we examine at which moment migrants create a home, and we outline determinants of geographic/material and emotional/spiritual facets of said home. We seek to show where home is equated more with house/building, locating it vis-à-vis an emotionally meaningful home as a safe haven and a place where migrants »feel at home«. We depict how various »homes« overlap in the sending and receiving countries. As such, home is understood here as a safe place, but also as a persistent symbol of ideas and values originating from the country of origin, as well as elements added, expanded and transformed through a migratory experience. By focusing on narratives pertaining to home in general, as well as specific practices linked to ways of celebrating and culinary practices that occur at home, we see home as a family identity project.

Samozatrudnienie jako strategia aktywności zawodowej kobiet - Polki na brytyjskim rynku pracy
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Sadurska-Duffy, Ewa
Self-employment is a common practice in the European Union. In 2014, this form of employment was chosen by about 16.4% of workers (EUROSTAT 2014). An increasing proportion of self-employed persons are women and immigrants, for whom self-employment offers a relatively easy way to enter the labour market. The article focuses on the entrepreneurial behaviour of Polish women in the United Kingdom. It investigates their reasons for setting up their own ventures, their entrepreneurial profiles and strategies, and work-life balance. It also looks at main threats and possibilities associated with running a business and different types of support they obtain in their entrepreneurial activities. By drawing from a variety of sources: current literature, existing employment and migration data, and the author’s own research, the study creates an opportunity to bridge the gap between the sociology of work, gender studies and migration research.

Strategie migracyjne. Integracja językowa a utrzymanie języka polskiego w rodzinach w dwujęzycznych regionach Hiszpanii - przykład Katalonii i Balearów
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Mejnartowicz, Agnieszka Anna; Kuźniak, Dariusz
Poles are considered in Spain to be fast integrating linguistically and well-functioning regarding communication. Undoubtedly, a good command of language is fundamental in social and profession integration and (depending on individual motivation) partial or full cultural integration. This strategy can be extended to younger generations born in the host country, who sometimes completely abandon their native language. In this paper, we will present the motivations and fears associated with the transmission of the Polish language on the basis of diagnostic research conducted in Polish and mixed families residing in Catalonia and the Balearic islands. In the introduction, we will discuss the specifics of the policy of language integration concerning immigrants in those bilingual regions of Spain, and the public education system based on early immersion in the co-official language. Then we will justify the objective and present the methodology and results of a survey conducted among 100 families residing in Catalonia and Majorca, which constitutes the largest concentration of Poles in the Balearic Islands. The article will conclude with observations regarding the intergenerational transmission of the Polish language also in the context of the transmission of cultural patterns (the value of the recessive language in Catalan-speaking society).

Strategie adaptacyjne przedstawicieli młodego pokolenia mniejszości litewskiej w Polsce po migracji edukacyjnej na Litwę
(Wydawnictwa AGH, 2017) Wójcikowska, Katarzyna
The aim of the article is to explore the adaptation strategies adopted by the young generation of the Lithuanian minority in Poland after educational migration to Lithuania. The analysis is based on 55 in-depth interviews with biographical elements, conducted between 2012–2014 among representatives of the researched group. In the first part of the text I explain the specificity of this type of mobility and challenges related to it. Then, I distinguish two strategies of adaptation – »minority group-oriented« and »foreign homeland-oriented«. The attitude towards the community of origin (the minority group in Sejny region) and towards the host community (Lithuanian society) are the criteria to identify them. The first strategy aims to recreate the well-known social world in the new circumstances and to strengthen its borders. Maintaining relationships mostly within the own group and remaining active in the local Lithuanian community in Sejny region are its key elements. The second strategy is focused on immersing in a new socio-cultural reality, while maintaining ties with the community of origin. Expanding networks of interaction and changing ways of participation in the community of origin are its main pillars. I also discuss the circumstances which favor the adoption of a specific strategy, such as time of migration, stage of the individual’s biography, and place of origin. Moreover, I indicate the transnational potential of both strategies and as a consequence, the opportunity to perceive the Lithuanian minority in Poland from a different perspective – not as a strongly territorialized group, but as a trans-border community.
