Description

Abstract

W Kopalni Soli Bochnia stwierdzono występowanie fluorescencyjnego halitu. Zjawisko to jest wynikiem współczesnego wytrącania kryształów halitu z wód krążących w kopalni. Fluorescencja przejawia się kolorem czerwonym i pomarańczowym w wyniku oświetlania światłem UV o krótkiej długości fali. Fluorescencja jest aktywowana poprzez domieszki $Mn$ (ok. 0,2 % wag.) i $Pb$ (ok 3,8 % wag.).

The photoluminescence of selected halite crystals from Bochnia Salt Mine is observed. This is a result of contemporary precipitation from percolating waters as a side effect of mining activity. The fluorescence in red and orange is activated by short UV light. It is activated by $Mn$ and $Pb$ impurities equal to ca. 0.2 wt. % of $Mn$ and up to 3.8 wt. % of $Pb$. This does not affect the unit cell parameters determined by powder X-ray diffraction. Fluorescent salt precipitates from percolating waters containing ca. 3.9 ppm $Mn$: the concentration of $Pb$ is below the detection limits. The experiments indicate that fluorescence is apparent when halite forms from solutions containing more than 0.8 mg $Mn/L$ and more than 1 mg $Pb/L$. The presence of $Pb$ as a co-activator is required: $Mn$ alone does not activate the fluorescence of halite. Primary rock salt in the mine does not show fluorescence at all. Fluorescence of contemporary salt in Bochnia is a result of mining activity.
