Description

Abstract

Nickel is very important in the world economy, it is used in its most strategic sectors. Global recoverable resources of Ni deposits in 2016 it was estimated at 79 million tons, while the annual production was about 2.5 million tons. There are two main genetic types of nickel deposits, i.e. laterite and sulphide deposits. Laterite nickel deposits in SE parts of Asia occur in such countries as: Philippines, Indonesia or Myanmar and they are usually associated with ophiolite, i.e. a group of underwater or alkaline igneous rocks formed under the surface. The highest production of Ni in the Philippines have Taganito and Rio Tuba, whereas the largest resources have the Pujada, Berong and Mindoro deposits. The most important economic meaning in Indonesia are the nickel deposits Soroako, Weda Bay or still Pomalaa, which have been leading in recent years in terms of production. Due to the resources, the most interesting deposits are North Konawe, Weda Bay and Gag Island. In Myanmar, the only deposits from which Ni is obtained are Tagaung Taung and Mwetaung.
