The aim of the doctoral thesis research was to redesign the experimental set-up, adapting it to testing the capture of various pollutants present in the gas phase (laboratory simulated flue gas (process)), with particular emphasis on research on the design of new absorbers and testing sorbents for the capture of Hg(0). The research focused on two topics: (1) simultaneous real-time measurements of the removal of elemental mercury Hg(0) from exhaust gases using own-production sorbents based on metal oxides and sulfides and others (2) the use of absorbers of various designs (three different reactors) for study the variety of Hg(0) removal processes from exhaust gases. The combination of these two above topics was aimed at examining, in laboratory conditions, the processes of mercury capture in simulated process gases, e.g. from coal-fired boilers. The influence of selected sorbents modified with sulfur compounds on the capture of Hg(0) was analyzed during the experimental time (at least 2-4 h of online tests). Tests were also performed with other sorbents at various amounts, at different temperatures, configurations of the absorber and its chambers, and other variable conditions. According to the plans, the redesigned and modified laboratory system can regulate and control the simulated conditions and composition of exhaust gases. The newly designed reactors gave good experimental results that improved Hg(0) capture efficiency compared to a fixed bed reactor, when using the same amounts of selected sorbents.en
