Factors influencing quality of experience by users of video services – research using ecologically valid assessment criteria

Abstract

Przedmiotem rozprawy doktorskiej jest metodologia badań Quality of Experience w usługach wideo. Autor bada rozbieżność między złożonymi modelami teoretycznymi QoE a praktyką pomiarową opartą na krótkich, silnie kontrolowanych testach wykorzystujących skalę ACR. W odpowiedzi zaproponowano trzystopniowe podejście badawcze. Najpierw opracowano i zwalidowano kwestionariusz, umożliwiający identyfikację czynników wpływających w warunkach zbliżonych do codziennego korzystania z usług VoD, streamingu na żywo i wideokonferencji. Następnie zaproponowano oszczędny model ścieżkowy. Wreszcie przeprowadzono dwa eksperymenty testujące najważniejsze czynniki wskazane w badaniach eksploracyjnych. Wyniki pokazują, że choć treść i obecność społeczna są istotne na poziomie deklaratywnym, nie modyfikują ocen ACR. Rozprawa wyznacza granice interpretacyjne testów standaryzowanych i wskazuje, kiedy konieczne jest ich uzupełnienie innymi metodami. The subject of the doctoral dissertation is a methodology for Quality of Experience (QoE) research in video services. The author investigates the discrepancy between complex theoretical QoE models and measurement practice based on short, highly controlled tests using the ACR scale. In response, a three-stage research approach is proposed. First, a questionnaire was developed and validated to enable the identification of influencing factors under conditions close to everyday use of VoD services, live streaming, and videoconferencing. Next, a parsimonious path model was proposed. Finally, two experiments were conducted to test the most important factors identified in the exploratory studies. The results show that although content and social presence are significant at the declarative level, they do not modify ACR ratings. The dissertation delineates the interpretative limits of standardized tests and indicates when it is necessary to complement them with other methods.
